ABOUT THE BOOK

Adeline, Giles and Kesiah grew up in unconstrained equity. They were not bound by class, but friendship. In her heart and soul young Adeline always knew she and Giles were predestined for one another. Social order and events determined to keep them apart until tragedy struck and thrust them together again. Will the obstacles that separated them for so long tempt fate and rectify destiny's path?

Exasperated, Giles turned away from his mother and opened the French doors leading outside. "I'm off. I must go visit Kesiah."

He took the one path that ended at no particular spot on the grounds, turned and walked towards the gravesite. He found himself walking beyond it, just down the other side of the hill where the small stream that leads to the lake ran through a grove.  He remembered seeing Adeline here the day everyone was told of his engagement to Kesiah. It was why he knew that even if Jeremiah Williams had left abruptly after he married Adeline, she was not untouched.

He'd come out here to get away from all the well wishers. She had come here to get away from the news. He learned too late how she had felt about him for so long a time. There she was, sitting by this same stream...crying. He'd never known her to cry. She'd heard him approach, stood up and wiped tears from her face with her arms. He saw her burgundy hair highlighted by the sun. Her tear dried eyes lit up as she smiled bravely at him. They came close together as she wished him all the happiness in the world, got up on her toes and kissed him. He felt electricity surge through his veins at the moment her sensuous connection landed on his lips. It was here she had pronounced, without speaking, how she felt about him; evidently had for a long time. She had never made an attempt to tell him. When he looked back he knew he had missed all the signs. Understood he had really known, deep down, whom he belonged with. She was so young, so innocent and so beautiful. They had both been untried at that time yet when they joined as one it had been as if they had always belonged together. They lay for a long time with the sun smiling down on their union. In the aftermath of their ecstasy he had fallen asleep. When he woke she was gone. From that day on she had rarely spoken to him, save in polite company or situations when it was dictated she had to do so. She never came to Palisade and he had seen her return here only to bid farewell to Kesiah. Keeping reins on the love he had for Kesiah was the easiest way to let go of how he felt about Adeline after that day. He let it slide into the furthest regions of his mind. He let his wife make their joining bloom in full. Now, here, he wondered what it would have been with her. He knew no one would have approved a marriage. Where would he be? What would be his caste in life? Would they be happy, have children? Would she have died like......? No. He had to stop. That wasn't the path he had chosen. She wasn't the woman he had spent so many glorious days and nights making love to, sharing, growing...  He turned back and looked up the slight hill towards Kizzie's grave. He had to leave the memory here, buried from so many for so long, where he had always left it. He walked past the grave without saying a word. That was something he had not done since she died so short a time ago. He did not take notice of his neglect in doing so as the field became a path to the house once more.
